Thịt gà chặt làm 4 phần, thịt heo cắt miếng to bản bằng bao diêm, rửa sạch, để ráo nước.
Chuẩn bị nguyên liệu để nấu canh. Ngọc trúc và trái sung ngâm nước, cắt thành miếng.
Cho nước vào nồi, khoảng 2/3 lượng nước tính từ đáy nồi. Sau đó cho tất cả nguyên liệu mứt táo, trái sung, đậu đỏ, ngọc trúc, mạch môn, hạt ý dĩ, vân lĩnh, phục linh vào, đun sôi.
Khi nước sôi, cho thịt gà, thịt heo đã ráo nước vào nồi, đậy nắp nồi lại, tiếp tục đun lửa to trong 20 phút. Hạ lửa xuống, đun tiếp với lửa nhỏ trong khoảng 60 phút. Vớt bỏ lớp bọt trên mặt nồi canh.
Trước khi tắt bếp, cho thêm 1 muỗng cà phê muối vào nồi canh, nêm nếm cho vừa miệng.
Múc canh ra tô, thưởng thức. Thịt gà mềm, đậm đà, quyện với vị ngọt ngọt của mứt táo, bùi bùi của sung, thơm lừng của mùi thuốc bắc sẽ chinh phục cả gia đình ngay từ miếng đầu tiên.
